I have a dream…

“I have a dream…one day…little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” Martin Luther King Jr.

Nine years ago when I first visited South Africa, I took a walk down a quiet street and spied into a gate to find a preschool where little black children and little white children were playing together on the playground. This mental snapshot never left me and was the dream I hung onto for the future of this nation.

Then early last year, when moving back to South Africa was only yet a dream, a friend took this picture of Lukas and his best friends playing on the playground in Kona and my mind was instantly taken back to South Africa. I told the photographer that when we moved to South Africa, I was going to enlarge this picture, hang it on my wall as a reminder of hope and what I dream for my kids and the nation. I dream they can go to a South African school of diversity and reconciliation and hope in Christ.

When we arrived I was disheartened to see that so many schools around us did not reflect the diversity of the nation. Yet, I kept dreaming and each day as I drove Lukas to his mostly white preschool, I would pass by a church that had a beautiful large playground and lots of classrooms. Each day it sat there empty and I would pray “Lord, make this our dream school!”  I had no clue how to start a school or even the ability to do so but I did the only thing I knew how to do… PRAY!

But then… God! God led me to meet another mom from my son’s school who had the same dream I did, but was carrying it for 3 years. I told her the venue I had in mind and she just happened to know a leader at this church. Within a few weeks she had confirmed the use of the church for our school, gathered a group of us parents together to dream and plan, hired teachers and met with the government to register our school!

This week Ralph met with her to create the website of our school, God’s school; the dream that God planted and will birth. My dream is coming true. This school will bring white kids and black kids together to grow up in the Presence and ways of God to bring hope for this nation and the world.

Never underestimate the power of a dream and prayer!
